As part of the creative process you will learn and use a variety of simple hand assemblage techniques including plaiting, stitching, tying and weaving. You will be encouraged to fully explore the materials by play, test and experiment, resulting in often unexpected and surprising results! Time spent connecting with nature is now well proven to be of great benefit to your health and wellbeing. Add to that a day out in the beautiful surroundings of Toolerstone, an opportunity to be creative, with good company and a delicious home-made lunch – you are sure to feel relaxed and rejuvenated.

Timetable of the day

09:30       A warm welcome to @:Toolerstone with refreshments
10:00       Introduction to Jane’s sculptures & pieces
10:20       Time to wander around the gardens to collect your natural treasures
11:15       Coffee will be served
11:30       Continue with the workshop and work at your own pace
13:00       Delicious homemade, lunch in the refectory
14:00       Putting the finishing touches to your work.
15.15       Refreshments will be served
16:30       Workshop ends but, you can take your art home!

Experience level

We welcome all levels of experience from beginners to the enthusiastic professional!

Jane is an artist who uses natural and found materials, which she collects on daily walks in the ancient woodland near her home in Derbyshire. She gathers the materials that catch her eye such as thorns, bark, seeds, feathers and acorn cups. These materials are often overlooked, trodden on and discarded despite the wealth of colour, pattern and texture they offer. The irregularities, tiny imperfections and random twists and turns make each item unique. These ‘natural treasures’ are then hand-stitched, tied, woven and intricately assembled into vessels, sculptures and collage in her Derbyshire studio.

Jane graduated from the University of Derby on the Crafts BA course in 2011, with first class honours and received the University Purchase Award. Jane now exhibits her work in galleries, craft events and exhibitions. We are thrilled to welcome Jane to our family of tutors here at Toolerstone.
